Social Media Influencers Fueling Unofficial Market for Unapproved Slimming Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are encouraged to message these profiles privately for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Vendors promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Worries

However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Several experts said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Some influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Content Elimination

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down violative content and prohibited associated keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to keeping the platform safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Operations

Research also found groups with up to nine thousand members marketing retatrutide using the platform's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at residence.

After moments of entering one group, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.

Item Details and Pricing

Within these communities, messages display black plastic packages with postal service labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between powder vials, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should last, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Security Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly moderated dangerous material on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Cautions

“People are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to recent price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are using social media. But fake injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her team has already seen patients injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose users to potentially significant health risks”.
