The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
