Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
